Dear GirlShrink,
Last year when I didn’t bring someone home for Christmas dinner to my family’s for the 4th year in a row, some of my cousins (I think) started this rumor that they think I might be a lesbian. While I have no problem with gay people — I’m not gay!

I don’t want to be alone on Christmas or New Year’s, but I haven’t been able to meet anyone. What is wrong with me?

Dear Miss Lonely,
I’m not saying that you are on cloud 9 all of the time — but I bet that you are not that concerned about whether you are seriously involved or not when it’s NOT the holiday season are you? There is something about the holidays that makes us really want to be paired off like penguins. Now I’m not one to talk. I brought my husband home to holiday dinners for years before we were married. Some of that was because I wanted to be with him and show him off to my family and then there was another part of me that wanted to show to the world (or to my crazy family:) that I was with someone who cared enough about me to leave his own family and spend the holidays with me and mine. I know it isn’t pretty to hear…but it’s honest.

But I’m hear to also say that I was 19, 20, 21 years old. I wasn’t mature enough to realize that being in a relationship didn’t define my worthiness. Now I’m not sure how old you are, but I want you to know that don’t let this define you. There is nothing wrong with you. You just aren’t in a relationship right now. And that’s okay. As a woman in the 21st century, you have the opportunity to do and be whatever you want and still live happily ever after – whenever that is!

By the way, you need to ignore silly family members who assume that if you aren’t dating that you must be gay. You shouldn’t even give rumors like that (by your own family at that!) any of your energy. They are silly! Hope that helps!
