I asked a friend if he would go on a date with me, and at first he acted like he was interested, then he told me he had to warn me that he is kinky. When I asked how, he said whips and chains. How do i know if he is serious, or trying to scare me off? I really just meant like going out sometime, not sex.

Does it really matter if he is serious vs. trying to scare you off? If he is serious and that’s not what you’re into – then why bother? If he is trying to scare you off, he doesn’t sound interested – so again, why bother? If he is just playing around – that’s an odd thing to say as a joke and not tell you “I was just playing”. So I think your decision is pretty easy. If you did date him and it progressed to a physical relationship, I think you would probably be in over your head. So bottom line here is to follow your instincts. If you’re creeped out — then I’d listen to that and walk the other way.
